Being in the 21st century, we are now legally allowed to marry anyone, irrespective of religion, gender, and even life, at least in a lot of countries. That being said, let’s look at some of the strangest things some people said “I do” to.
1. THE BERLIN WALL
Eija-Riitta Berlin-Mauer, now 54, first fell in love with the Berlin Wall in Germany when she saw it on the television when she was 7 years old, and on 17th June 1979 she tied the knot with this large stretch of bricks in front of a few guests. But inevitably when the Berlin wall was torn down in 1989, Eija-Riitta was left heart broken, and we might say widowed. Her love for the wall is clear with her surname which literally translates to Berlin Wall.
2. EIFFEL TOWER
For anyone looking to hit on this historical monument, think again, he’s no longer single. Former soldier Erika La Tour Eiffel, suffering from object sexuality, hosted a wedding ceremony in April 2007, in which she officially wed the beloved Paris monument.
3. A BODY PILLOW
Every Monday morning as we struggle to get out of bed, we all boast about how much we love our beds and pillows and how we wish we never have to leave them, and it goes without saying that these sleepy comments are just platonic sleepy comments. But this was not the case for Lee Jin-gyu who had an official wedding which was overseen by the local priest in which he got married to his body pillow to whose face an anime character was attached.
4. A ROBOT
How many times have we given up on love and wished we could perfectly engineer a partner for ourselves instead of having to look for a partner in others, and how often is it that these wishes come true? Almost never for most of us, but Chinese engineer Zheng Jiajia is not most of us. Frustrated about not finding love, he built and married a robot in 2017 which can speak in simple sentences and can recognise Chinese characters and images.
5. CARDBOARD CUTOUT OF HIMSELF
Loving oneself is necessary to lead a happy life and have a stable mental health. But when self love turns into narcissism, we might do something out of the ordinary like Liu Ye from China’s Zhuhai City who married a cardboard cutting of himself after he claimed to be “dissatisfied with reality” in 2007.
6. A TRAIN STATION
We are all thankful for the public transportation system, especially the railway system. But there is a huge line between being grateful and being in love, and it seems Carol Santa Fe forgot about this line when she married the Santa Fe railway station in California in 2015.
7. ROLLER COASTER
Every relationship has its ups and downs, but when it comes to Amy Wolfe and her husband, it literally goes up and down, mainly because her husband happens to be a roller coaster in Knoebels amusement park.
The dolphins are a beloved animal to almost every human on earth. We travel long distances and pay large amounts of money to view these friendly creatues or just swim around with them. But British Sharon Tendlor took this love to the next level when she wed her Dolphin Cindy (short for Cinderella), after a 15 year long engagement. But this joy was short lived as Cindy passed away 6 months after the union was blessed.
9. HIS DYING CAT
Our pets are a very important part of our lives, we love them unconditionally and connect with them in a way we might not connect with anyone else. But the sad truth is that animals don’t have a long lifespan, and it is important for us to learn to let go when it’s time, which was something German man Uwe Mitzscherlich did in an extremely unconventional way. He married his feline friend, Cecilia while she was on her deathbed.
Jodi Rose, an Australian citizen spent years looking for love but to no fruitation. Turns out she was looking in all the wrong place (humans). Finally in 2013 she found true love when she married the Le Pont du Diable, also known as the devil’s bridge, in Ceret in the south of France. When asked for the reason, she stated that she married the bridge for “his dark and mysterious history”.
At this day and age with the various technologies available, mobiles and laptops have become a key aspect of our day to day life. More so for 35 years old psychology student Bill Rifka who claims to be in a homosexual relationship with his iBook.
12. CARDBOARD ROBERT PATTINSON
When the famous Twilight series written by Stephenie Meyer was adapted into a film franchise, every teenage girl went gaga over the beautiful cast, especially Robert Pattinson who played the lead protagonist Edward Cullen. While most of us outgrew this adolescent crush, it seems that Lauren Adkins had a hard time letting go. Being realistic enough that her chances of actually ending up with Pattinson were slim, she found a life size cardboard cutout of Robert Pattinson and married it in 2014 at the Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel in front of about 50 guests.
13. VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE
We all love our cars, but not like Washington based Edward Smith, who claims that he is currently dating a white 1974 Volkswagen Beetle. He claims to have had relationships with over a thousand cars, starting from when he was fifteen years old. It is said that he is suffering from “mechaphilia”.
14. WORLD TRADE CENTER
The entire world was left in shock and stunned when the 400 meter high towers came crashing down on September 11 in 2001, killing tens of thousands of people, but it seems that Berlin resident Sandy K, might have been a little more heartbroken than us as she saw the love of her life come crashing down. She had been in love with the north and south towers since she was eight years old.
15. GHOST PIRATE
People do the weirdest things when it comes to love. One such example being Irishwoman Amanda Teague, who made contact with the spirit of a Haitian pirate from the 1700s who was executed for the act of thieving on the high seas. The already mother of five, married her ‘soulmate’ off the coast of Ireland and was officiated by a shaman priest.
