Fifty Shades of Grey was an important milestone when it comes to erotica literature. It normalized female sexual desires and no longer made it a taboo. But the writing and the characters were far from perfect. E.L. James lacked, a lot, and it showed in her poor writing and world-building. So here are some adult novels with much steamier chemistry and much more believable characters and storylines.
1. Bared to You by Sylvia Day
This will remind you a lot about Fifty Shades when it comes to the characters, but you will realize that you can relate a little more to the female protagonist. Also, the flow of the story, the way it builds up the tension is much better than Fifty Shades.
2. Rock Me Two Times by Dawn Ryder
A guitarist. Too big for his britches. A designer especially hired to design leather pants that are perfect for his band. Are you sold yet?
3. Beautiful Secret by Christina Lauren
Written together by Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings, this story is hot and steamy. The female protagonist is stronger and steadfast. And if you’re a fan of the infamous English accent, then this is a sure pick.
4. Tampa by Alissa Nutting
This is Lolita with a modern twist. You must read it just for the scandalous attraction between a teacher and student, but the obsession will bind you with the pages.
5. The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory
Who doesn’t like erotica disguised as a chick-lit with its innocence and horniness put together?
6. Wallbanger By Alice Clayton
Wit, humour, and an awkward first meeting! How do you deal with a neighbour who is the reason for those weird sounds and wall-banging from across the wall? That’s what Wallbanger is about.
7. The Black-Dagger Brotherhood Series By J.R.Ward
Do you like those muscles? Maybe vampires as well? It ranges in a long series, all of them featuring different couples and their journey from being strangers or hostile to becoming each other’s mate. It is my personal love.
8. The Siren By Tiffany Reisz
This erotica is for the hardcore fans as well as the BDSM community. A little to the dark side and just edging to creepy, this book will bind you with its unique writing style and characters to yearn for.
9. Lords Of The Underworld series, Gena Showalter
If you are the kind, who when offered anything featuring Greek or Roman Gods, will suck it up without asking for anything else, then this book is for you.
10. The Gentleman’s Club By Emmanuelle de Maupassant
This erotica is for those who are tired of female leads having nothing to do but mere instruments to further plot lines. With progressive female characters leaving behind old norms, this is a perfect pick.
11. Liberating Lacey by Anne Calhoun
I don’t know about you but I’ll be sold for the novel if the guy’s name is Hunter. If you like the innocent die trope and how she is, quite literally, liberated to experience herself and her body, then pick this.
12. Songs of Corruption series By C.D. Reiss
It is a book about the successful and smart woman and here comes our hero who is an Italian mobster. Why are dangerous people always so sexy?
13. Face the Fire by Nora Roberts
Witches and wizards! Magic entwined with erotica is something hard to find and yet harder to like. Nora Roberts can make anyone compelled, stay, and then engross with her compelling writing.
14. Letting Go By Maya Banks
Hooking up with your ex-husband’s best friend while your hands are tied to the bed, it sounds atrocious. But the way Banks draws you in with her characters as layered like an onion, you’ll be forced to stay and know all about them.
15. Montana Sky By Nora Roberts
I know. Nora Roberts is just that good. Cowboys, rolling in the hay, and murder mystery, all is in this adult novel! Need I say more?
